2019 Scouting for Food Details (updated)

Good evening Pack 197 parents,

We will be participating in our annual Scouting For Food drive in partnership with Troop 197. Rather than distribute bags on a Saturday (we have historically struggled with participation on distribution), we are distributing bags this Thursday, November 14th from 7pm-8pm.

When: Thursday, November 14th
Where: Meet At Alcott Elementary At 6:45pm. We will distribute bags from 7pm-8pm.
What To Bring: Dress for the weather, bring flashlights.

This is not a drop-off event. We will canvass neighborhoods by dens and parents are required to stay with their cubs. We need participation from all of the families in Pack 197 in order to make this event successful, which is again why we are distributing bags on a date and time where we would normally meet.

We are planning on picking up bags on Sunday, November 17th in the afternoon, but time still TBD. This is to avoid conflict with University of Scouting on Saturday, November 16th.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to reach out to me or your Den Leader.

Thank you for your quick attention to this matter.

Yours in Scouting,
Rob Bryant

2019 Scouting for Food

“A Scout is Helpful. “

Be on the lookout for details for the Pack’s participation in the Scouting for Food service project.

We are planning on distributing bags during the November 11th den meetings from 7pm-8pm and meet at Alcott Elementary for route assignments. We would then pick up the bags on Sunday, November 17th in the afternoon to avoid conflicting with University of Scouting on 11/16.

Feel free to shoot me an email with questions or chat with Nathan Ericson or Russ Leadbetter.

Rob Bryant

ABC Meal Packing

Pack 197 will be serving Heritage Christian Church, our chartering organization, with its yearly ABC Meal Packing event.

What’s Happening? /// We’ll be helping fill and package many thousand dry goods meals for families in need. The dry goods being packaged will be rice, beans, and several other powdered nutrients. They are measured out, and then sealed in quart-size plastic bags for distribution to families. Scouts will be shown how to measure everything, and then will work in teams of six to fill each quart-sized bag.

Who’s Invited? // All Scouts, parents, and older siblings are invited to participate. Due to the nature of keeping a clean food packing station, non-school-aged siblings will wait in the lobby of the church with parents. Pack 197 Scouts have participated in this event the last two years, and it is a very tangible way to see service efforts come to fruition in a very short morning.

When? /// October 12 from 9:00-10:30 — We’ll meet in the church lobby as a group at 8:50.

Where? /// Heritage Christian Church — The same place we have Scouts!

Why? /// To support our Chartering Organization. To serve others. To have fun!

Other Details ///

– Scouts will wear gloves and hairnets while packaging food. If there are any allergies to food preparation/medical gloves, please check in with me about substitutes.

– Parents are requested to stay on-site and participate alongside their Scouts during the service project.

– Please wear your Activity Uniform (uniform shirt), and be ready to have fun!

Families are welcome to show up the morning of the event. However, if you definitely plan on coming, please notify Nathan Ericson.

Pack 197 – Raingutter Regatta
Hello Parents and Leaders,

The annual Pack 197 Raingutter Regatta race is scheduled for Friday, August 9 from 6-8:30 p.m. This is such a fun summer event that includes the trimaran race and a potluck.

Purchase a regatta boat. I have 8 boats that can be paid for in cash or PayPal me and picked up at my house. The boats are $6.50 each. Regatta boats can also be purchased from the Scout Store or online. The Scout Shop is located at 807 Kinnear Road.

Scouts shape and finish/paint the boat according to their design and instructions (see attached tips). This is A LOT easier than pinewood derby cars. Sign up to bring a potluck dish on this sign up genius, https://www.signupgenius….raingutter. Bring a gallon or other large jug of water to help fill the raingutter. Siblings can participate in a separate race at the end. Come on Friday evening to have a great time!

Pack 197 – Summer Fishing

Category : Activities , News , Summer Fun

Pack 197 – Let’s Go Fishing!
At our recent committee meeting, we decided to offer another July pack event for our Cub Scouts. So grab a scout friend and your fishing pole and come meet us at the park!

Who Can Attend?
All Cub Scouts, family members and siblings. This is NOT a drop off event. At least one parent needs to stay with their cub scout(s). PLEASE send me an RSVP so I know how much bait to bring – or text 913.226.8596.

Monday, July 22 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Hilmar Park
6533 Hilmar Dr

I have reserved the Hilmar Gazebo.

What to bring?
This is a BYOP event – bring your own fishing pole. I will bring some bait (worms) to share with the group. No license is required to fish at this location. However, this is a catch and release pond, and I am not good at taking fish off of hooks so please plan to help your scout if they make a catch.

This is a great opportunity for incoming Bears to work on their “A Bear Goes Fishing” elective.

Feel free to bring your own snack to have under the gazebo. Water will be provided. Please bring a reusable water bottle.

2019 “Day with the Clippers”

Hello Scout families,

As the school year wraps up, please remember there are numerous fun activities planned for Pack 197 this summer. A new activity this year will be Pack 197 day at Huntington Park to watch the Clippers on June 23 at 2:05 PM. Our group will be seated together in section 3. The pack will be recognized on the scoreboard and will likely have a visit from the mascot for photos. After the game, the kids are allowed to run the bases. If you haven’t been to a Clippers game, you are missing out on the fun!

PLEASE NOTE, this is not a drop off event, each family will be responsible for supervision of their scout.

Please click on this link to select and reserve tickets: https://westervillepack19…ctivities/

Families can purchase either the Family Pass which includes tickets for two adults and up to four kids, or individual tickets. Ticket orders will be taken through June 12, 2019, and families will pick them up at the Will Call window at the stadium on the day of the game.

When registering, use the name of the person that will be picking up the tickets at Will Call, they must show an ID to pick up the tickets.

Be sure to use our coupon code for a discount of up to $13 per family toward tickets to this game!!

This is a great way to see your scout friends over the summer and help Pack 197 qualify for the Summertime Achievement Award.

If you have questions, please contact Jim Pipo or your den leader.

Message from the Chaplain

Friends of Pack 197,

As some of you know, we have an optional interfaith worship service on Sundays before departure from camp. As our spring camp out approaches, I wanted to invite any cub who wants to share his or her story, to feel welcome to do so at Cold Toes. No “testimony” required, any opportunity to share in fellowship is important. If any cub would like to give a couple of quick thoughts on what “Duty to God” means, share a lesson learned, shout in joy, or participate at any level, they are encouraged to do so.

The service is interfaith. We take the time to recognize and focus on our spiritual development. The service is open to anyone, and I am always open to having representatives from any background assist in leading the service.

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, some musical talent is needed. I sing, horribly, during service. If your cub has got the music bug, I’m looking for singers or musicians to show off their talents and “Lift a Joyful Noise”. (Could be a great opportunity to see how those lessons you are paying for are working out, wink).

Let me know if you cub is interested in participating, or simply join me at camp.

Yours in Scouting,
