Cold Toes 2024, April 20-21st

Hi Pack 197,

I’m excited to invite you and your family to our upcoming Cold Toes Campout on Saturday, April 20-21. The event will take place at Dragonfly Daycamp, which is part of Highbanks Metro Park.

To celebrate Earth Day, this campout will feature a couple of age-appropriate conservation projects. 🌎🌳 I’m still working out the exact details, but most likely, the older Scouts will help the park clear out some invasive Honeysuckle plants. The younger Scouts will work on a simpler project that doesn’t involve the use of gardening tools 🙂 – most likely making a simple bird feeder and/or wildflower seed pods. We’ll split into two groups, and I’ll let parents choose which activity they deem most appropriate for their families.

In addition to the conservation project, we’ll hand out advancements/awards, play some fun field games, and have a campfire program—starring your Scouts!

Please note that this is not a drop-off event. A trusted adult must accompany all Scouts at all times. Siblings are also welcome to attend.

Note that you cannot use the main park entrance to access Dragonfly – you must use the entrance noted above.

 BONUS: SUMMER PLANNING SESSION

If you would like to help us plan some fun summer activities for our Scouts, come to the campout early (11:00 AM) for a planning meeting and lunch.

 COST & REGISTRATION

The cost is $5 per person (used to purchase food), and Scouts who achieved the popcorn goal may attend for free. If your Scout is eligible for the free admission, you will receive a coupon code in a separate email.

If you do not have a medical form on file with the Pack (dated within the past 12 months), you will need to complete parts A & B of the form for each person attending. A physician sign-off is NOT required.

 MEALS

Dinner (tacos or hot dogs) and s’mores will be provided on Saturday night, along with breakfast (pancakes and bacon) on Sunday morning. Please be sure to bring a mess kit (plate & fork) for each person. We will have food options to accommodate gluten and nut allergies. Please reply and let me know if you have any other dietary concerns.

Pack 197 Parent/Committee Meeting on Tuesday, April 2, 2024

Hi Parents,

This coming Tuesday will be our next Parent/Committee meeting. Please join us Tuesday at 6:30 at Heritage if you are able to help plan any of the upcoming events. This time of year we are seeking more volunteers, since our 5th grade Arrow of Light den has crossed over (along with their adults).

Here’s what we’ll cover:

  • Spring Campout on April 20th
  • Pool party on May 19th
  • Filling positions for next year, including Cubmaster

Upcoming Events – Jan 2024

🏁 Pinewood Derby Feedback
I hope everyone had a great time at the Pinewood Derby last weekend! If you or your Scouts have any feedback on the event, or on the changes we made this year (such as the updates to the design awards and changes to the Open Class / Outlaw race), please reply and let me know. We want it to be a fun and memorable event that everyone enjoys, so please don’t hesitate to share your feedback with me, and we’ll keep it in mind for next year’s event!

⚜️Blue & Gold Banquet
I also wanted to make sure that everyone is saving the date for the Blue & Gold Banquet. It’s going to be Sunday, Feb 25: 5-7 PM at the Westerville Community Center. This will be a fun event for the Scouts to celebrate their accomplishments – we’ll have dinner, award rank advancements, and watch our Arrow of Light Scouts to “cross over” into their new Scouts BSA troops! 

We’ll have plenty of space this year, so please feel free to invite extended family members to celebrate with us! There will be a minimal cost per person to help cover the cost of food ($5, I believe). You will receive an email within the next week or so with ticket information and other details.

At the moment, we have two brave souls who have offered to help coordinate the banquet… so we could use a few more helpers. 😅 If you’re willing to help with the event (think: purchasing items, ordering food, decorating, planning activities, setup, etc.), please email Amy (amyhohman@gmail.com).

Your Scouts’ den leaders will be reaching out to help you finish-up any rank requirements that they may be missing. Please be sure to get these items completed and let your den leader know, so your Scout is able to earn his/her rank badge at the banquet. And don’t worry – if they don’t earn it in time for the banquet, we can award it at a future Pack meeting before the end of the school year.

December Pack meeting == SUCCESS!

Hi Pack 197 Families,

I’m excited to invite you to our December Pack Meeting! It’s happening this Tuesday, December 12th at 6:30 PM in Room 230 at Heritage (the large upstairs room). Here’s what we have in store for you…

Get ready to step into a Winter Wonderland as we celebrate the Christmas season by building our very own Gingerbread Village! We will be making gingerbread houses using small cartons as a frame. (See our Facebook page for some fun pics from previous years!)

To make this activity a smashing success, we need tons of graham crackers, frosting, and other candy to decorate with. We also need volunteers to help at the candy tables, as well as for setup and tear downSign-up to help here!

But here comes my favorite part – we will be celebrating our very successful popcorn sale by awarding prizes and giving Scouts who met their $300 sales goal the chance to throw a pie at Mr. Rob

 And let’s not forget about our upcoming Pinewood Derby race on February 3rd. We will be announcing all the exciting details and passing out car kits at the Pack meeting.

Food drive at Fresh Thyme on Saturday 11/18/2023 = SUCCESS!

Hi Parents,

We still have some slots available for the food drive at Fresh Thyme next Saturday. Please sign up here if you are available: https://www.signupgenius….855-2023#/

We started this service opportunity last year and it worked out very well. Fresh Thyme is going to give us a spot inside the store to set up a tent and collect non-perishable food. We then donate it to WARM and it helps those in need right here in our community. I am looking for 3 Scouts per 1 hour time slot to make it possible to take breaks and walk around the store, talking about healthy food choices and food insecurity. Class A uniforms are ideal for this opportunity, but if your Scout does not have one, a Pack 197 t-shirt will also work.

Please contact me with any questions and ideas/incentives to make this a fun activity for the Scouts.

November Service Projects: Scouting For Food and Pack Meeting = SUCCESS!

Hi Pack 197 Parents,

I wanted to extend my gratitude to everyone who participated in our Election Day service project. Pastor John from Heritage expressed his appreciation, saying, “We REALLY appreciate your partnership in serving our citizens.”

In the spirit of thankfulness, we have two more service opportunities this month: Scouting for Food and our November Pack Meeting.

Scouting For Food
We are partnering with WARM’s (Westerville Area Resource Ministry) food pantry to help individuals in our community facing food insecurity. There are two ways to participate:

• Join us for our “Fill A Tent” food drive at Fresh Thyme grocery store on November 18 from 10 AM – 3 PM. You can sign up for a time slot here: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0D48AEA62DA7F5CF8-45950855-2023#/

• Collect shelf-stable food from your neighborhood. We will distribute empty grocery bags with a list of items that WARM is requesting at next week’s den meeting. You can pass those bags out to your neighbors. The note on the bag will ask the recipient to fill it and place it on their front porch on a specific date. Before you pass out the bags, you’ll want to write in a date that works for you; then you’ll pick up the food and bring it to the Pack Meeting on November 28.

You are invited to participate in either (or both) of these opportunities. Any Scout who does will be eligible to receive a Scouting for Food patch!

November Pack Meeting
Our Pack Meeting on November 28 will feature a hands-on service project. We’re partnering with Seeds of Caring to provide Compassion Kits for unhoused youth. The goal is for Scouts to gain empathy for folks without a place to call home, and then use their helping hands to write notes of caring and assemble compassion kits. The meeting will be held at 6:30 PM at the Heritage Church main auditorium (the large room downstairs by the main entrance).

Please mark your calendars for these fun and meaningful opportunities to serve!

2023 Pumpkin Race! (Tues 10/24) = SUCCESS!!!

It’s almost time for our Pack’s annual Pumpkin Race! This event is always a crowd favorite. Here’s how it works: Each Scout decorates a pumpkin, puts it on wheels (think: Tonka trucks, skateboards, plywood with casters, etc.), and cheers as it races down a 4’ ramp and (hopefully) careens into the back wall! Scouts will also have an opportunity to vote for their favorite racer designs.

STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW…

🎉 Friends & siblings are welcome!
This year’s Pumpkin Race will be a “Bring a Friend” event! That means any siblings or friends in grades K-5 are welcome to build their own Pumpkin Racer and have fun with us! Please tell your friends and family about this fun and free event! (Feel free to forward this email or share our social media posts.)

✅ The race itself is not competitive, and there are only two rules for your racer:

1. Make sure the wheelbase is no more than 18” wide (otherwise it won’t fit on the ramp)
2. DO. NOT. CARVE. THE. PUMPKIN. (otherwise it will almost certainly explode into a disaster of apocalyptic proportions when it hits the wall …or so I’ve been told)

Scout Night!! 9/5 @Heritage Church

⚜️ SCOUT NIGHT OPEN HOUSE

On Tuesday, September 5th, we will be hosting our Scout Night Open House from 6:30-8:00 PM at Heritage Church. This is a wonderful chance for friends and families to learn more about Pack 197 and the Scouting program. We’ll also have treats and fun activities for kids who visit. (Please note that there will be no den meetings this evening.)

Creeking – Sat 7/29/23

Hello Pack 197,

We did our own little election this weekend over at our Facebook Page (Westerville Pack 197) to determine where we would go Creeking on Saturday and we have a winner!

We’ll see you this Saturday at 10am to go Creeking. Be sure to wear shoes that are okay to get wet, and feel free to bring a net or empty container if your Scout wants to try to catch (observe then release!) any aquatic life.
